Captain's Report

Waimairi School Cricket Report

By Cameron Baillie

On Friday 24th October Waimairi School hosted the first inter-primary school cricket match of the season against Paparoa Street School.  Waimairi bowled first and everyone put in a fantastic effort, restricting Paparoa Street to a very limited total of 13 runs off 10 overs.

Waimairi then came in to bat with a great performance from Quinn Smith, who was declared batsman of the day by the umpire. Paparoa Street came back strongly taking several wickets but not managing to control Waimairi’s score. In the end Waimairi came away with a convincing win with a final score of 48 – 13.

Thanks to the parents and students for their great support, we are looking forward to this week’s game against Fendalton School, once again at Waimairi School.

Waimairi Cricket Team battles to a strong opening win

Battling gale force sou westers and passing showers, captains Cameron Baillee and Quinn Smith led the Waimairi representative cricket team against 5 times Canterbury Primary School Champions Paparoa St at the Waimairi Oval on Friday afternoon. As reigning champions from 2013 and having ex students in the school,  this was a fitting way for Waimairi to kick start their 100 Year anniversary celebrations.
This local derby was always going to be a classic in the opening round of a World Cup competition organised by Canterbury Cricket for Christchurch schools.
Waimairi's acccurate pace attack restricted the Paparoa batting line up to 13 from their 10 overs. Sharp fielding, featuring  a superb outfield catch at deep fine leg by Taylah Holdem, and frequent wickets from all the team kept the Waimairi supportive lunchtime student crowd in high spirits.
On their turn to bat, talented left hander Quinn kept the Waimairi parents on edge as he peppered the mid wicket boundary. One 6 almost made Westholme St. Abby McKissock also threatened the cycleway with a perfectly timed lofted shot deep over backward square leg. However, it wasn't until Mitchell McMillan and Felix Falconer showed experience and maturity in the penultimate overs that Waimairi secured a well deserved win: 38 - 13.
Keep an eye out for the next game on Friday 31 October at the Waimairi Oval. Admission free from 1 pm.

For the Footballers

Football Information from Mainland Football

After the school break we start immediately with Summer Football; a fun 5-aside competition for player’s school years 3 till 8 on Monday afternoons, both boys and girls and aimed at experienced and unexperienced players. If numbers permitted the leagues will be split up appropriate to age, gender and experience. Note, we have added school years 3 - 4 to the league.

Just for girls aged 5 years and older we run several Girls Only hubs this summer to meet the needs of the female player. Each session will consist of a fundamental movement’s warm-up, some football coordination and technique and small sided matches on a rotation basis.
