Battling gale force sou westers and passing showers,
captains Cameron Baillee and Quinn Smith led the Waimairi
representative cricket team against 5 times Canterbury Primary School
Champions Paparoa St at the Waimairi Oval on Friday afternoon. As
reigning champions from 2013 and having ex students in the school, this
was a fitting way for Waimairi to kick start their 100 Year anniversary
celebrations.
This local derby was always going to be a
classic in the opening round of a World Cup competition organised by
Canterbury Cricket for Christchurch schools.
Waimairi's
acccurate pace attack restricted the Paparoa batting line up to 13 from
their 10 overs. Sharp fielding, featuring a superb outfield catch at
deep fine leg by Taylah Holdem, and frequent wickets from all the team
kept the Waimairi supportive lunchtime student crowd in high spirits.
On
their turn to bat, talented left hander Quinn kept the Waimairi parents
on edge as he peppered the mid wicket boundary. One 6 almost made
Westholme St. Abby McKissock also threatened the cycleway with a
perfectly timed lofted shot deep over backward square leg. However, it
wasn't until Mitchell McMillan and Felix Falconer showed experience and
maturity in the penultimate overs that Waimairi secured a well deserved
win: 38 - 13.
Keep an eye out for the next game on Friday 31 October at the Waimairi Oval. Admission free from 1 pm.
